UTAS Stadium redevelopment in Launceston a step closer to reality

The redevelopment of the University of Tasmania (UTAS) Stadium in Launceston is a step closer to commencing following the announcement of the scope of works for the $130 million upgrade project. 

This vital community infrastructure project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, each committing $65 million. 

“The Australian Government is investing $65 million towards the proposed UTAS Stadium redevelopment in Launceston, supporting economic activity and the proud sporting legacy of Tasmania’s north. 

“We are committed to working in partnership with the Tasmanian Government to revitalise UTAS Stadium in a way that benefits everybody who uses it and wants to be part of it. 

“Today is an important step towards bringing this vision for urban renewal, civic pride and sporting success closer to reality. 

“This investment is part of our Government’s commitment to creating a sustainable investment framework for growing cities such as Launceston,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said.

Scope of works for the UTAS Stadium redevelopment will include: 

• A new centre-west stand that will provide 
  • New seating options and more accessible seating and specator amenities 
  • New and more contemporary player/home team change room facilities and amenities 
  • A new integrated interchange bench and new coaches’ boxes for use on match days 
  • New corporate and hospitality facilities, including premier seating within the new seating tier 
  • New media and broadcasting facilities 
• A new eastern stand that will provide 
  • New and more accessible spectator facilities and seating 
  • Improved spectator amenity and atmosphere, including bringing fans closer to the playing field 
  • The capacity for new toilets, food and beverage and associated amenities 
  • A south-east entry plaza will help to spread entry/exits around the venue 
  • A stronger connection and links with the wider Inveresk precinct, QVMAG and the University of Tasmania 
• Matchday facility upgrades within the existing Carlton United Brewery stand 
• New infill seating to the western stand, which will provide new accessible seating options 
• Upgraded sports lighting and the replacement of the current LED ribbon board 
• Accessibility and compliance upgrades, including compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 
• A series of small moves, upgrading the venue to meet contemporary sporting requirements 
• Enhancements that will increase revenue opportunities and enhance the atmosphere and experience 
• The project’s completion will deliver a sustainable elite sporting and entertainment venue able to attract national events, while continuing to support the local community, local economy and the Tasmanian AFL team 

“These upgrades of the UTAS Stadium will not only improve the overall experience of players and attendees, it will deliver significant economic knock-on effects for the wider community here in Launceston and provide a state-of-the-art, accessible facility for the entertainment, sporting and cultural gatherings. 

“We are proud to deliver this upgrade and to be supporting the City of Launceston’s vision to make the city a premier location as not just a sporting and entertainment location but also a business, retail and lifestyle hub. 

“I want to thank the Australian Government and Launceston City Council for their commitment to this key project and for recognising the importance of UTAS Stadium to the people of Tasmania,” TAS Minister for Stadia and Events Nic Street said.

With the scope of works now confirmed, completing the concept designs for the UTAS Stadium redevelopment will be a key priority early this year to enable development application and planning approvals to be prepared for lodgement by mid-2024. 

Construction is anticipated to begin later this year, consisting of several works packages that aim to maximise opportunities available to the local industry. 

The redevelopment is expected to be completed by early 2027. 

“The upcoming decision on the transfer of ownership of UTAS Stadium will pave the way for the significant investment committed by the Tasmanian and Federal Governments and ensure continued professional and community usage of the facility. 

“The funding committed for the upgrade and expansion of UTAS Stadium recognises the venue’s importance as a sporting and entertainment venue – one which demonstrates ongoing economic, social and cultural benefits to our city and region,” Mayor of Launceston Matthew Garwood said. 

“I am excited to see a critical piece of Tasmania’s sporting infrastructure receive such strong support from all levels of government. 

“We know what powerful economic multiplier stadiums are, from the building phase to gameday revenue, they provide significant benefits to the entire local community. 

“By investing in this infrastructure now we are locking into place a bright future for sport and entertainment in northern Tasmania,” Chief Executive Officer of Stadiums Tasmania James Avery said.
