Sydney Metro project update: Contract awarded for Sydney Yard Access Bridge

Monica Gameng   |   January 31, 2017

Laing O’Rourke has secured the contract to deliver works on the Sydney Yard Access Bridge project, which is part of the New South Wales Government’s $11.5 billion Sydney Metro project.

As part of their contract, Laing O’Rourke will be responsible for the design and construction of the Sydney Yard Access Bridge – a bridge for controlled heavy vehicle access from Regent Street into Sydney Yard at Central Station. This new bridge will help facilitate the construction of the Sydney Metro project.

“Laing O’Rourke has a long and proud history of delivering major metropolitan rail projects around the world, including here in Sydney.

“The contract was signed with Transport for New South Wales last week, making our role official and signalling the start of work on the design phase of the project,” said Laing O’Rourke’s Regional Director Mark Dimmock.

Construction works – in tunnels and above ground – are well underway at various locations along the route of the Sydney Metro Northwest. Works include the following:

  • Installation of the track slab
  • Installation of the railway tracks
  • Ventilation systems
  • Installing cable and equipment including signalling, communications and electricity
  • Installing overhead wiring
  • Installing other equipment such as lighting, drainage and safety systems including emergency walkways and fire hydrant systems
  • Ongoing construction of the skytrain
  • Construction work on the stations and precincts
  • Construction of service facilities
  • Road and footpath upgrade works
  • Construction of new road and pedestrian bridges
  • Installation of rail track within the Sydney Metro Trains Facility

Sydney Metro City and Southwest, on the other hand, is currently in the planning phase. The first – out of five – tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is expected to be in the ground before the end of 2018 and it will deliver a new 15.5-kilometre twin railway tunnels from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood to Sydenham.
