Construction on the new Melton Hospital in Victoria is set to commence later this year following the appointment of Exemplar Health consortium to build the more than $900 million hospital.

The consortium is comprised of Capella Capital as sponsor and investor, Lendlease Infrastructure Investments and Invesis as investors, Lendlease as builder, and Honeywell and Compass Group as facilities and maintenance managers.

Exemplar Health was chosen following a thorough evaluation process to determine the best value-for-money outcome. The consortium will design, construct, finance and maintain the new Melton Hospital for 25 years, under a Public-Private Partnership agreement.

The Victorian Health Building Authority will oversee the project's delivery and once construction is completed, the new health facility will operate as a public hospital under the world-class care of Western Health.

Works to prepare the project for major construction are already underway, including the establishment of utilities and services and the extension of Bridge Road to connect the new hospital to Ferris Road, which is nearing completion.

Construction will begin later this year after the contract has been officially awarded and the new hospital is on track to be completed in 2029.

“We are getting on with the world-class hospital that families in Melton need and deserve,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

“This is a significant step forward on our massive, fully funded Melton Hospital project which will make a huge difference for local families when it opens in 2029,” Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas said.

“The new hospital will truly transform Melton into a major hub, not just for healthcare but for local jos, education and training too,” Member for Melton Steve McGhie said.

The new Melton Hospital will be the State’s first fully electric hospital, designed to ensure it can provide services to the growing outer-west communities of Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne.

The new health facility is going to be located at 245A Ferris Road, near Cobblebank Station, and it will feature:

  • A 24-hour emergency department
  • At least 274 beds
  • An intensive care unit
  • Maternity and neonatal services
  • Mental health services, radiology services and ambulatory care
  • A new education and training hub for doctors and nurses in Melbourne’s west

The almost $1 billion project is estimated to create over 2,400 jobs during its construction and support more than 3,975 direct jobs on site when the new Melton Hospital opens.

Once up and running, the new health facility will have the capacity to treat approximately 130,000 patients annually.
