Metro rail line for Western Sydney Airport receives $7bn investment

The Australian and New South Wales Governments will each be investing $3.5 billion towards the delivery of a metro rail line in time for the opening of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek.

“This project and the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will drive economic growth for Western Sydney, boost jobs and housing and make it into a key hub of our city all as part of our Western Sydney City Deal,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

This metro rail project will start with Stage One of the North South Rail Link that will run from St Marys to the Western Sydney Aerotropolis via the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

$61 million from the Australian Government’s $3.5 billion investment is going to be spent on the delivery of the Elizabeth Drive Overpass which is a vital part of the early enabling infrastructure to ensure that the airport is ready to accommodate rail access.

According to Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge, the delivery of this new rail line will help bring together rail, road and airport infrastructure in time for the completion and beginning of operations of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in 2026.

“This will provide a crucial north-south rail connection for the people of Western Sydney and create a new way of travel for the community.

“It will contribute to the success of the airport and the businesses in the Aerotropolis in helping to bring Western Sydney to the world,” Mr Tudge said.

The business case for the airport rail line is set to be delivered to the Australian and State Governments by the end of 2019.
