A $378.6 million construction contract for the new Sydney Metro railway station at Martin Place has been awarded to Macquarie Group, with the project set to transform Martin Place into Sydney’s first integrated metro station development.
“As part of our plan to improve public transport, new metro rail will help give people more choice on how they get around Sydney.
“With the new Martin Place Station, customers in the heart of Sydney’s CBD will have access to an unprecedented level of public transport and will be more connected than ever before,” Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said.
The new Martin Place Station integrated development will include:
In order to develop new building towers to the north and south of Martin Place, Macquarie Group will be paying approximately $355 million to the New South Wales Government for air rights above the new metro station.
Lendlease has been appointed by Macquarie Group to design and construct the new underground station as well as the retail space, pedestrian connections and building towers above the station.
The new Martin Place Station is going to be built with the same high standards as all the new metro stations in the city, and it is going to be owned by the State Government as well.
The commercial and retail developments above ground are going to be built at the same time as the new Martin Place underground station, helping reduce community impacts and allowing the buildings to be completed almost the same time as the beginning of service of Sydney Metro in 2024.
This development is part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project which is expected to cost between $11.5 billion and $12.5 billion.
Sydney Metro services are set to commence in the second quarter of 2019 in the city’s north west region, while the metro rail is going to be extended in 2024 under Sydney Harbour, through the CBD and on to Bankstown.
