John Holland begins construction on $300m office building in Melbourne

John Holland has commenced construction on Dexus’ $300 million retail and office tower located at 180 Flinders Street in Melbourne. John Holland is also the anchor tenant on the development, taking a long-term lease for 7,700-SQM of the new office building.

“We are pleased to have enabled John Holland to consolidate its regional and corporate office across Melbourne, while meeting their needs for a well-located, quality workspace offering superior amenity and transport solutions.

“180 Flinders Street will be a new office space in the vibrant ‘Paris end’ of Melbourne CBD,” Dexus CEO Darren Steinberg said.

The development - dubbed Flindersgate - is situated opposite Melbourne’s Federation Square and it will have approximately 20,100-SQM of office and retail space. The area will include 12,100-SQM of A-Grade office space that is going to be built over the existing public car park. The project will also include refurbishing the existing buildings at 189 Flinders Lane and 180 Flinders Street - each with an area of 3,700-SQM.

The 10-storey Flindersgate - designed by SJB Architects - will incorporate extensive refurbishment of existing heritage buildings and it will also have a sweeping view overlooking the Botanic Gardens and Federation Square.

180 Flinders Street is located in close proximity to Flinders Street Station, which is set to benefit from the Melbourne Metro.

Once the new building is completed - expected by August 2020 - John Holland will be moving its staff to the office space, making it the company’s new Melbourne Headquarters.

The remaining floor plates - which ranges from 500-SQM to 2,400-SQM - of Flindersgate will enable Dexus to attract a variety of customer types.

“We look forward to bringing one of the city’s most prominent office towers to life as builders of the new development. Our employees will enjoy the benefits of the building, with impressive features to support well being such as excellent public transport and bike access, end of trip facilities and generous natural light,” John Holland Building Executive General Manager David Lehmann said.
