Green light given to new $354m North-South Corridor project in SA

Construction on the next stage of Adelaide’s North-South Corridor - between Regency Road and Pym Street - is expected to commence in 2019, with the Australian and South Australian Governments committing $177 million each for the project.

The $354 million upgrade project will connect the South Road Superway to the Torrens to Torrens project with a 1.8-kilometre six-lane non-stop motorway that will pave the way for safer and more efficient travels along the route.

According to Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher, this project has been listed as a ‘priority’ project by Infrastructure Australia due to its “nationally-significant problem”.

“Delivery of this next stage, Regency Road to Pym Street, will complete a continuous 47 kilometre non-stop motorway between Gawler and the River Torrens.

“This project will improve road safety, reduce travel times by up to 8 minutes between Regency Road to Pym Street during peak periods along the North-South Corridor and deliver 210 new jobs per annum for South Australia,” Mr Fletcher said.

Currently, the concept design for this project includes:

• A 1.8-kilometre section of non-stop roadway, providing three lanes in each direction
• An overpass over Regency Road
• Left in and left out only access at Pym Street
• Full access to and from the non-stop motorway at Regency Road
• Intersection upgrades at Regency Road
• Two lanes in each direction on the South Road surface road to provide access to the surrounding community and local businesses
• Improved cycling and pedestrian facilities
• A new grade separated pedestrian and cycle overpass over South Road in the vicinity of Pym Street
• Landscaping and noise barriers (where required)

Further consultation with the local community as well as with the local and State Government agencies will be conducted to refine the design and alignment of this section of the North-South Corridor.

South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said that both the Australian and State Government are working closely to deliver vital infrastructure projects across SA.

“Works currently under construction along the North-South Corridor include the Darlington Upgrade, the Torrens to Torrens project and the Northern Connector.

“Projects like these are creating thousands of jobs for South Australians, tackling congestion, and improving regional connectivity,” Mr Knoll said.
