Contractor announced for VIC's $54m Evans Road level crossing removal project

The $54 million Evans Road level crossing removal project in Lyndhurst, Victoria has marked new major milestones, with the alliance between Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and Fulton Hogan awarded the contract to deliver the project; and the beginning of site establishment for construction.

“These organisations have a strong track record having successfully removed level crossings at Grange Road in Alphington and on Lower Plenty Road in Rosanna, duplicating the Hurstbridge line between Rosanna and Heidelberg and building the new Rosanna Station,” according to Level Crossing Removal Project’s statement.

In addition to the construction of a road bridge to replace the level crossing, this project will also deliver a number of components that were influenced by local feedback, including:

  • Increased planting around retaining walls
  • Barrier installation on the west side of the bridge to separate the shared walking and cycling path
  • Further future proofing the area to make way for potential road and rail upgrades

The Evans Road level crossing has been closed off to traffic since 2005, which has forced motorists to take longer detours. This has also divided the communities of Lyndhurts, Lynbrook and Cranbourne West.

Once the removal of the level crossing is completed in 2020, the communities are going to be reconnected and motorists will be able to experience faster travel times to the South Gippsland Highway.
