The $215 million Mitchell Freeway Extension in Western Australia marks a new major milestone with the appointment of the Mitchell Extension Joint Venture as preferred proponent to build the project.

The Mitchell Extension Joint Venture (MEJV) is comprised of BMD Construction and Georgiou Group.

“This is the second project Georgiou has secured in partnership with BMD (the other is Tonkin Gap) and it's contracts like this that bring all our skills into the mix to benefit our client. We look forward to further building on our partnership with BMD and Main Roads to successfully deliver this important project,” Georgiou Group said in a statement.

The final contract for this project is set to be awarded in the coming weeks and early works will commence in early 2021.

“The Morrison Government has prioritised funding for critical road and rail infrastructure in WA.

“That funding means a huge amount of construction activity is underway across Perth on targeted infrastructure that is helping the economy out right now, and building for the future,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

The Mitchell Freeway Extension is one of the major infrastructure projects along with the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension and other major road projects being fast-tracked by the State Government as part of Western Australia’s recovery from COVID-19.

“It’s fantastic to see these Australian-based companies, both of which have a significant WA presence and employ local workers, deliver one of our major infrastructure projects.

“This is one of eleven major road projects, in our Building for Tomorrow infrastructure program, where we have fast tracked to get works underway and workers on the ground as soon as possible,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

Once open to traffic, the extended Mitchell Freeway will provide a number of benefits to motorists frequently passing through this route, including improved access to residential and business areas, faster travel times and less congestion on local roads.

“The northern suburbs are booming and the population growth is only going to continue over the next decade.

“It’s vital we deliver these much needed infrastructure upgrades now,” Federal Member for Pearce Christian Porter said.

This $215 million Mitchell Freeway Extension will include:

  • Adding 5.6 kilometres to the Mitchell Freeway from Hester Avenue to Romeo Road with two traffic lanes in each direction and space for future widening
  • Completing the interchange at Hester Avenue
  • Adding a new interchange at Lukin Drive
  • Creating a rail tunnel or bridge for the existing rail to exit the freeway median to Butler Station
  • Building a new principal shared path for cyclists and pedestrians on the western side of the freeway from Hester Avenue to Romeo Road
  • Constructing and connecting Romeo Road between Marmion Avenue and Wanneroo Road
  • Adding noise mitigation, street lighting and safety barriers where required
  • Adding an extra lane to Wanneroo Road for 1.8 kilometres from Romeo Road to Trian Road

“Extending the Mitchell Freeway to Alkimos will slash travel times and make commuting safer for northern suburbs residents.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this project and I’m proud to be a part of a Government that is finally getting on with the job of building our northern suburbs,” State Member for Butler John Quigley said.

The Mitchell Freeway Extension is expected to create and support up to 1,200 local jobs, with the project due to be completed by October 2022.

This multi-million-dollar project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, each contributing $107.5 million.
