$92m funding committed towards road safety improvements across QLD

The Queensland Government is committing $92.3 million to get the ball rolling on several road projects across the State that will support local jobs and businesses. 

This funding has been made available through the Camera Detected Offence Program where money collected from camera fines is reinvested into road improvement projects. 

The multi-million-dollar funding includes $72.6 million for the Safer Roads Sooner program and $19.7 million for the Vulnerable Users program that was designed to address safety concerns for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists. 

“This National Road Safety Week, we’re delivering on our commitment to safer roads across Queensland with a $92 million investment. 

“This commitment is for all Queenslanders – road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the Queensland Government is playing its part by investing in road safety upgrades across the State. 

“The Miles Government will always put the safety of Queenslanders first,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said. 

Not only will this significant funding provide safer roads for families, businesses and industry, but it will also help stimulate the economy across Queensland. 

The funding will deliver a range of lifesaving road safety treatments, including: 

• Intersection upgrades 
• Turning lane improvements 
• Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure upgrades 
• Audio tactile line marking (ATLM) and wide centre line treatments (WCLT) 
• Raised reflective pavement markers (RRPMs) 
• Signalisation of left and right turns at intersections 
• Shoulder widening 

“I have campaigned for these vital upgrades which will deliver safer, more efficient roads throughout my electorate. 

“The funding will provide safer roads for families, businesses, and industry in Deception Bay and surrounding communities. 

“The Miles Government is committed to safer roads across Queensland,” Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting said. 

Projects to be delivered under the Safer Roads Sooner program include: 

• Bruce Highway upgrades – Bajool (Fitzroy) – $9.3 million for intersection improvements, ATLM, hazard clearing, RRPMs and wire rope safety barrier in median 
• Warrego Highway upgrades – Toowoomba – Dalby (Darling Downs) – $8.97 million for ATLM and WCLT, intersection upgrades, shoulder widening and new signage 
• Deception Bay Road / Bay Avenue / Moreton Downs Drive intersection – Deception Bay (North Coast) – $8.34 million for the upgrade of pedestrian facilities and provision of suitable shoulder width to accommodate cycle lanes as well as improvements to turning lanes 
• Brighton – Redcliffe Road (Hornibrook Esplanade) / Oxley Avenue intersection, Woody Point – $3.98 million for the upgrade of the Hornibrook Esplanade intersection 
• Lakeside Drive / Oonoonba Road intersection – Idalia (Northern) – $3 million to construct shared pathway, install pedestrian crossings and signalised left turn slip lanes 
• Capalaba-Cleveland Road (Shore Street West) / Gordon Street intersection – Ormiston (Metro) – $2.8 million to signalise the intersection and install bicycle lanes 
• Southport-Nerang Road / Ashmore Road intersection – Ashmore (South Coast) – $2.23 million for an intersection upgrade including improved slip lane angles, installation of a raised pedestrian crossing, turning lane improvements, pedestrian crossing improvements and line marking changes to improve safety of vulnerable users 
• Gillies Range Road – Little Mulgrave (Far North) – $2.11 million to install WCLT with ATLM and improved signage 

Meanwhile, the Vulnerable Users program will deliver: 

• Kingston Road / Moss Street / Rudge Street intersection – Woodridge (South Coast) – $2.83 million for intersection upgrades and improvements for pedestrian and cyclist safety 
• East Street / Mansfield Place / Olga Street intersection – Ipswich (Metro) – $2.2 million for intersection upgrades, including a raised platform to, to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety 
• Maryborough – Hervey Bay Road / Can Street intersection – Tinana (Wide Bay / Burnett) – $1.43 million for signalisation of the intersection and installation of footpath 
• Mackay Eungella Road / Kennys Road intersection – Marian (Mackay / Whitsunday) – $950,000 for intersection upgrades and installation of signalised pedestrian crossing with improved signalisation and flashing school zone sign 

“These upgrades mean better accessibility for road users and increased safety for everyone along Lakeside Drive. 

“This is another example of the Miles Government keeping Queenslanders safe on our roads,” Member for Mundingburra Les Walker said. 

“These upgrades mean improved safety for drivers and pedestrians along Hornibrook Esplanade. 

“Our Government is continually funding programs which will deliver road safety improvements on roads across Queensland,” Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said.
