A new biofuel refinery is set to be built in Kwinana and the Western Australian Government welcomes the new milestone for the $1 billion Kwinana Renewable Fuels Project.
The Kwinana project is one of five biofuel refineries that bp is planning to develop globally and it is expected to be the first to come online.
“I welcome this latest milestone as bp begins the transformation of its Kwinana infrastructure into a renewables hub.
“This transformational project, which is one of five in the world, is a testament to the fact that WA continues to be an ideal location to invest and do business.
“Initiatives like this bring significant benefits to our State, boost our strong economy and ensure we have a long line of local jobs and work for local businesses into the future,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
This billion dollar project is part of the company’s commitment to transform the old refinery into a renewable energy hub.
The front-end engineering design (FEED) process for the Kwinana Renewable Fuels Project has already commenced, marking a major milestone before a final investment decision is made.
The project will include repurposing the existing refining units and infrastructure at bp’s Kwinana facility to produce drop-in fuel products such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from bio feedstocks.
The Kwinana project is also going to be integrated with the site’s existing import terminal operations as well as plans for green hydrogen production that is currently under assessment in a feasibility study.
“Kwinana illustrates the power of the Australian economy and its ability to reinvent itself for the energy transition. This project is the first of its kind globally for bp and a first for Australia. It recognises the importance of our Kwinana site and Western Australia in the energy transition, so we’re thrilled to say bp is progressing with engineering plans for Kwinana,” Frederic Baudry – President of bp Australia and SVP fuels & low carbon solutions, Asia Pacific said.
The State Government has previously committed $300,000 towards bp’s H2Kwinana feasibility study.
The Kwinana Renewable Fuels Project is located in the Kwinana Industrial Area, which has supported tens of thousands of jobs and billions in investment.
“There has been a long association between bp and Kwinana over many years.
“It is very encouraging that we are seeing the rebirth of the facility as a renewable energy hub.
“Not only will this create jobs, but it will create jobs for the future as WA plays a leading role in the global shift to renewable energy,” State Development, Jobs and Trade Minister Roger Cook said.

Works have commenced on a new bridge over Western Australia’s Kwinana Freeway, which is set to help bust congestion and improve traffic flow on one of Perth’s busiest roads.
The second stage of Western Australia’s grid-scale battery energy storage system in Kwinana is now under construction.
The proposed $400 million lithium processing plant in Kwinana has been given the go-ahead by the Liberal National Government. West Perth-based MSP Engineering was also announced as the head contractor after leading the feasibility study for the project.
